Meetup notifications
by shh_admin
This page tells you about notifications via Meetup and how to use them more effectively. Please do not rely on Meetup notifications as the only way to get notifications of our events because this group may leave Meetup at the beginning of July 2025 so if you want to stay in contact you should either subscribe to our email list or follow our Facebook pages or both.
Features of Meetup notifications
It appears to us that:
- If you use the Meetup app then you won’t get some email notifications unless you turn off those push notifications in the app.
- If you are only getting push notifications via the Meetup app but if you don’t use the app regularly then you may miss notifications about new events.
- You may only receive Meetup notification, whether by email or push notifications, while Meetup considers you to be an “active member”. If you haven’t attended an event or visited the group for 3 months then we think that Meetup regards you as an inactive member and stops sending notifications.
- Some members have reported not receiving email notifications when they think they should have received them
- Fewer members are signing up for our events and this coupled with an 80% increase in meetup organiser fees from July 2024 makes it difficult for our group to cover its running costs so we may leave Meetup at the beginning of July 2025 if we decide that it no longer offers value for money.
More about Meetup notifications
You may receive notifications of forthcoming events via Meetup but we find that this is becoming less effective. For each Meetup Group that you belong to, you can set whether or not to receive notifications for that group and if so which ones to receive.
To change the Meetup notification settings
On the Meetup desktop site go to: Meetup > Settings > Email updates > Updates about your groups > South Herts Hikers > Edit
For South Herts Hikers, we suggest that as a minimum you enable New event announcements, event changes, reminders and updates and organiser announcements. You might wish to leave others turned off like comments, rating requests and photos.
To see Meetup mobile device settings
On the desktop site go to:
Meetup > Settings > Mobile notifications This tells you where you can get “push” notifications on a mobile device if you have installed the Meetup app.
For further details, please see Meetup help > Account, Notifications, and Payments > Notification settings > Editing my email settings
This gives you instructions for desktop and mobile web. It also states, “When certain push notifications are on, we skip sending the same info via email.”
